5 tips for better sleep

Leader Question: Do you know how long it takes for coffee to break down in your body?

In our workshops on self-management, it is becoming more and more common for leaders or employees to suffer from sleep problems. We too know the feeling when we have slept badly and are not fully functional.

For leaders, restful sleep is essential as it strengthens cognitive functions, emotion regulation and interpersonal interactions. In a demanding leadership role, good sleep promotes clearer thinking and effective decision making.

With a few little tricks, we can improve the quality of our sleep.

😴 Let's start with the coffee example - did you know that it takes about 5 to 6 hours for the half-life of caffeine to expire? So if you want to be relaxed in bed at 10pm, you should have your last coffee around 4pm.

😴 Establish a regular bedtime - Imagine going to bed at a similar time every night. Do you know what happens in your body? Your hormone balance regulates, you reduce stress in your body and you promote your internal clock.

😴 Develop a relaxing evening routine - Are you still scrolling or are you already relaxing? Are you spending time on your phone out of habit before bed? Imagine swapping this habit for reading or meditating, for example. This will make us more creative, imaginative and sleep more peacefully.

😴 Keep a clear dividing line between work and sleep - Imagine switching off all professional matters one hour before going to bed. You use this time to relax, whether it's by taking a warm bath or reading a book.

😴 Create a calming sleep environment - Imagine your bedroom is equipped with blackout curtains that prevent light from outside from entering. The room temperature is comfortably cool, and all you hear are soft sounds that lull you to sleep. This is calming and helps your body fall into a deep sleep.

Notice:

Start with 1-2 ideas to improve your sleep and try what works for you. In the long run, you'll create top conditions for clear decision making, emotional balance, and your necessary mental strength to handle challenges with confidence.
