Building daily routines as a leader

By Andre Ottlik · · 2 min read

Routine - boring everyday life or useful methodology?

Does the term "routine" sound dull to you at first? You associate it with boring, repetitive processes?

Then let us show you why your brain loves routines and what you can use them for.

"Every day we are confronted with making around 20,000 decisions," says Munich-based brain researcher Ernst Pöppel.

It all starts early in the morning with deciding your routine. When do I get up? Which sock do I put on first? How long do I brush my teeth?

Imagine if you had to make these decisions every day. We would lose energy already in the morning that we could better put into important decisions.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, for example, makes his daily clothing choices easy. He reaches for the same gray T-shirt and the same gray hoodie every morning.

But what's the point of routines? According to psychological research, they save us time and energy.

But why do we do it? With an average weight of 1,300 to 1,500 grams, the human brain accounts for about two percent of body weight, but it consumes almost 20 percent of the body's energy. Thus, it attracts attention with one characteristic in particular: it is an energy guzzler.

In our experience, it is therefore extremely helpful to start the day with a routine morning routine. You are more focused, can use your thoughts on really important topics and do something good for yourself.

What daily routines do you have?
