Dream teams: building your high-performance team as a leader
Dream Teams - How you as a leader can respond to individual characters.
A new monster project is coming up and you want a real A-Team for it! One that you can send out, knowing that they will rock it and the customer will love it. The A-Team is as different as day and night!
Each of these four unusual guys has his own strength: Hannibal the strategist, Face the empath, Murdock who can fly any plane and B.A. the strong one.
Of course, this is just a series, but their heroic stories contain valuable lessons about how teams work. ☝️ After all, even in real life, the best teams are made up of personalities with diverse, complementary skills.
You remember our post "Business Profiling." But how can you find such a team now? Anthropologist Helen Fisher has analyzed umpteen neuroscience data and identified 4 personality types:
🧑🏽🔬Der Discoverer - needs more stress than others to get up to speed, ideal for risky tasks. Explorers are influenced by the neurotransmitter dopamine, which rewards particularly risk-taking behavior.
👩🎨Der Shapers - considered stable, reliable, and more likely to weigh decisions carefully. Primary influence is serotonin, which tends to reward low-risk behavior.
🥸The Diplomat - has empathy, verbal skill, and a sense of what other people are thinking and feeling. Their driving force is the hormone estrogen.
🏋️♂️Der Doer - is competitive, pragmatic and determined, driven primarily by testosterone. The ideal power team combines these 4 personality types, including individual strengths.
But you should also know their "weaknesses"! So be aware of how to motivate your characters:
-
Explorers get bored quickly, especially with the same tasks over and over again. So give them creative challenges.
-
Diplomats need recognition, so show them your appreciation.
-
Doers need clear hierarchies, otherwise they have conflicts about responsibilities.
-
Creators are always well organized and don't like last minute changes. They like to work autonomously.
The best teams combine diverse personalities such as explorers, designers, diplomats and doers. But in order for their strengths to complement each other, you as a leader must also take their idiosyncrasies into account.
Of course, that's not all. There's much more to creating your Dream Team. In the coming weeks, we will provide you with additional inspiration.
