F*** perfectionism

By Andre Ottlik · · 2 min read

Vilfredo Pareto was an Italian engineer, economist and sociologist who came up with the 80/20 principle as early as 1906.

It says that with 20% of the effort we already deliver 80% results and the last 20% to perfection means another 80% effort. So Pareto can be the solution to many resource problems.

Some things we or our colleagues do simply out of habit with too high quality expectations or because we simply enjoy the task too much. However, not all of our to-dos require this perfection. Often 80% is enough. (The presentation doesn't always have to be polished.) This also applies to your leadership skills.

You probably already know the principle and use it for yourself. But do you also look at the tasks of your colleagues with Pareto glasses?

Check your to-dos and mark: What is 80/20 enough and where do you need perfection? Distribute tasks accordingly to perfectionists and optimizers in your team and tell your colleagues how a task should be executed - only 80 or 100%.
