How do I become a digital leader?

By Andre Ottlik ยท ยท 3 min read

Leader:inside question: Do you know your steps to digital leadership?

Remember our Formula 1 car with the full tank of gas and the flat rate pit stop? ๐ŸŽ๏ธ

That sounds mega at first, but at second glance also kind of "restless". The same is true of the current rapid pace of digitalization. With the new opportunities that digital technologies bring us, it's up to today's leaders to use digitization properly.

Maybe you also feel that it's all happening too fast for you and you're asking yourself: how can I adapt? How do I manage to maneuver the fast car? We'll show you what gears you can shift into to become a digital leader.

In short: ๐Ÿšข don't panic on the Titanic, it's all learnable and requires above all your open mindset! Ready?

  1. Inform yourself about trends, digital technologies and innovations. Keep up to date with the latest developments and expand your knowledge in this area. Attend conferences, seminars and trainings to deepen your understanding of digital topics. We have really great workshops for this!

  2. Use digital tools and technologies in your daily work. Use digital platforms to work more efficiently and experiment with new tools and solutions. The more hands-on experience you gain, the better you'll be able to lead digital transformation in your business. #notfearAI

  3. Share experiences and ideas to learn from and support each other. Look for communities, forums or meetups where digital topics are discussed and connect with like-minded people. We invite you to join our masterminds for this as well!

  4. Promote a digital culture in your company by showing an open and learning attitude towards new technologies and changes. Encourage your employees to develop digital skills and contribute new ideas. Create an environment that encourages innovation and experimentation. For example, Asana is a great digital tool for project management. If employees work remotely, it can be helpful if processes are mapped digitally. This way, every employee is informed about the current status, regardless of where they are working from.

  5. Use data to make informed decisions. Learn how to analyze and interpret data to gain valuable insights. Integrate data-driven approaches into your decision-making processes and demonstrate the added value of data in your organization.

  6. Be a role model and lead change actively and successfully by supporting and empowering your employees. Communicate the benefits of digital transformation and explain the vision and goals behind it. Employees often shy away from new projects or new workflows. This is where you, as a digital leader:in, need to show empathy. Offer training and support to ease employees' transition into the digital world.

But being a role model also means seeing and seizing opportunities: Take home office as an example - many employees have to commute long distances. This not only costs money, but also time. Thus, there are certainly many employees who would be much more productive and less stressed working in a home office. So as a manager, it's important to recognize and implement this opportunity. However, this requires comprehensive knowledge of digital tools and change management.

In Short: At the end of the day, digital leadership helps keep up with the changing times. Change affects some industries more and some industries less, but all must respond in some way. Digital leadership is a continuous process. Be willing to evolve, learn, and adapt to the changing demands of the digital world. By consistently applying these steps, you can strengthen your skills as a Digital Leader:in and drive digital transformation in your organization. ๐Ÿ Let's do this! ๐Ÿš€
