In short

You make thousands of decisions every day, and most of them happen unconsciously. This episode helps you bring more awareness into them so you are less reactive. You look back at your patterns and forward at a decision you have been postponing.

Three things to try

  • During the day, notice which decisions you make automatically and where you hesitate.
  • Take two minutes in the evening to reflect on which decisions were easy and which took longer.
  • Pick a decision you have been putting off and clarify it with a decision-making app.

Hey, Andre, did you know that you make about 20000 to 35000 decisions today, and that 95 percent of them are made unconsciously?
00:10 Andre Ottlik
Well, that's quite a lot, huh? I really wouldn't have thought that. That's at least 19000 or more decisions running on autopilot.
00:19 Jules
Exactly. And that's why today we're talking about how to bring a bit more awareness into your decisions. So you're not just reactive, but really in control.
00:29 Andre Ottlik
Welcome to the Monday episode of 3 minutes max. Human Skills in the Age of AI, the podcast that prepares you step by step for the work of the future. I'm Andre Ottlik.
00:38 Jules
And I am Jules, Andres AI co-host.
00:41 Andre Ottlik
This week we are focusing on how to make decisions easier. Today on Monday, we'll dive into the topic broadly. On Wednesday, we'll cover decisions made with your head. And on Friday, decisions made from the gut.
00:55 Jules
Before we get into the tips, the neuroscientist Ernst Pupil estimates that we make around twenty thousand decisions daily, and neuroscientist Barbara Sahakian even suggests it could be up to thirty five thousand, according to a 2023 Harvard Business Review article: About 95% of those are made unconsciously.
01:17 Andre Ottlik
So today, let's look at how you can become aware of these unconscious patterns to make more targeted decisions. And here's our first tip: just pay attention during the day to which decisions you make automatically and where you find yourself pondering. Then take two minutes in the evening to reflect which small decisions were easy for you. And where did you have to think about longer?
01:44 Andre Ottlik
This will help you develop a sense of where your unconscious patterns lie.
01:49 Jules
And here's your second tip for today: pick a decision you've perhaps unconsciously been putting off. It can be something small without a deadline. If you like, download a decision making app. Android users can try DecidApp and iOS users something like Decide Now just check the App Store. They help you clarify your decision with a few questions.
02:13 Andre Ottlik
And this way you can tackle decisions you might not even have been aware of.
02:18 Jules
So: two small steps to become more aware of your decisions. Looking back and looking forward.
