In short

Badly worded feedback can easily make you upset and defensive. If you are always defensive, people may stop giving you feedback at all. Two tips help you accept feedback without getting tangled up in it.

Three things to try

  • When you receive feedback, take a deep breath and listen without going on the defence.
  • Ask a clarifying question, such as "Can you give me an example?", and sleep on it if you can.
  • Write the feedback down and ask ChatGPT why it triggers you and how you can use it constructively.

Andre. Your podcast is boring. Try to be a little more entertaining like you are in real life. Also, you should say goodbye to the listeners at the end. Not me. And every episode needs a summary at the end. That makes sense, right?

Wow, unexpected feedback and not optimally worded. So the big question is how do I take such feedback without getting upset and defensive? Like use silly computer, you're the boring one. You're just ones and zeros. Anyway, this is my first podcast. I think I can make a few mistakes, and that's the kind of reactions we're looking at today.

Welcome to our Wednesday episode of three minutes Max Human Skills in the age of AI, the podcast that prepares you step by step for the future of work. I'm Jules Andres, AI co-host.

And I'm Andre Ottlik. Today we are talking about how we can accept feedback better without getting emotionally tangled up in it. According to a study from the Journal of Applied Psychology, people who consistently block feedback often feel more insecure and develop less. But those who consciously accept feedback can learn more in the long run and remain calmer. If you're constantly defensive, some people might stop giving you feedback altogether. I've seen this in dozens of teams. So here's our first tip for today. When you receive feedback, take a deep breath first. Listen without immediately going on the defense. Then ask a clarifying question like, can you give me an example? Or what would you have liked to be different? And if you can sleep on it with some distance, feedback is much easier to assess.

Tip 2 with AI: Use a tool like ChatGPT to reflect on your initial reaction. Write down the feedback you received and ask the AI why does this trigger me? Or how can I use this constructively? This helps you separate emotions from facts.

One more important thing for today welcoming feedback doesn't mean that you agree with everything. You might just take one or two pieces to change and to gain new perspectives. If you enjoyed this episode, subscribe to 3 minutes max.,
